Firefox ‘CPU resources’ issue better but not gone

Firefox’s use of CPU resources has improved but hasn’t gone away completely. The popular Web browser has had a longstanding CPU (Central Processing Unit) utilization issue that–in some cases–overtaxed the CPU, caused noticeable heat issues in small laptops .

Intel fires opening salvo in x86 vs. ARM smartphone wars

I have been writing about Moorestown since Intel started talking publicly about it in 2007, so the official unveiling of Intel’s first x86-based SoC aimed at the smartphone market marks the end of a long journey. Moorestown’s appearance also marks the beginning of another journey, as Intel prepares to face down ARM in its quest to win handset and tablet makers over to the x86 camp

NVIDIA VP says ‘Moore’s law is dead’

NVIDIA VP says 'Moore's law is dead'

NVIDIA and Intel haven’t been shy about their differing respective visions of the future of computing in the past year or so, but it looks like Team GPU just upped the rhetoric a little — a Forbes column by NVIDIA VP Bill Dally argues that “Moore’s law is dead.” Given that Moore’s law is arguably the foundation of Intel’s entire business, such a statement is a huge shot across the bow; though other companies like AMD are guided by the doctrine, Intel’s relentless pursuit of Gordon Moore’s vision has become a focal point and rallying cry for the world’s largest chipmaker. So what’s Dally’s solution to the death of Moore’s law? For everyone to buy into parallel computing, where — surprise, surprise — NVIDIA’s GPUs thrive

Maingear, iBuyPower and CyberPower reveal Phenom II X6 1090T-based bargain desktops

It’s akin to clockwork, as they say — Maingear , iBuyPower and CyberPower have all decided to pump out new and / or revised gaming desktops based on AMD’s latest and greatest (and cheapest, some would argue) six-core processor, barely waiting 24 hours to do the honors. The Phenom II X6 1090T certainly has the whole low-price thing going for it, enabling this trio of PC builders to offer up complete systems starting at under $1,000. Maingear’s new Limited Edition Vybe packs a $999 price tag, USB 3.0 and SATA 6Gbps support, ATI’s Radeon 5000 series graphics, a DVD burner, 640GB WD Caviar Black SATA 6G hard drive and 4GB of DDR3 RAM

Intel said to be prepping 1.46GHz Core i7 ULV processor for this Fall

Intel said to be prepping 1.46GHz Core i7 ULV processor for this Fall

There’s already been some rumors circulating that Intel would be rolling out a 1.33GHz Core i7 ULV processor this summer, and it now looks like that will be followed by an even faster low-voltage processor later in the Fall. That’s when, according to Fudzilla , Intel will be launching a 1.46GHz Core i7 680UM processor, which reportedly has the same 18W TDP rating and 4MB of cache as its slower counterpart, and can clock all the way up to 2.53GHz in Turbo Boost mode

AMD’s new AMD 890GX HD chipset announced, reviewed, lauded

AMD has officially announced the successor to its 790GX chipset, and the kids at Hot Hardware have not only put it through its paces but have been kind enough to let us in on their results. Apparently the two 890GX they tested should at least perform “on par” with previous AMD platforms, although the integrated Radeon HD 4290 graphics (performing at a none-too-shabby 700MHz, according to the company) were found to be “superior to any other AMD IGP,” even surpassing the performance of Intel’s HD Graphics solution in a number of tests.
